Developed final product and expected results
The expected overall result of MONOIL is an interdisciplinary and transferable response for the reinforcement of Ecuadorian actors in their capacity to respond, at differing scales, from the national level to the domestic sphere, in the quest to control contamination and to reduce associated vulnerability. To this purpose, MONOIL will enable the production and dissemination of the tools and knowledge required to improve the management and prevention of socio-environmental processes generated by the exploitation of hydrocarbons and to also reinforce environmental safety:
1. Recommendations for the reduction of social vulnerability linked to oil sector activities and to improve the social responsibility of businesses;
2. Evaluation grid of local forms and strategies for implementing the legislation modifying the distribution of profits from the exploitation of hydrocarbons, for the benefit of local communities.
3. Development of prospective scenarios of socioeconomic development according to normative guidance and current energy policy guidelines.
4. Diagnosis of current environmental contamination by PAHs and heavy metals associated with oil activities in environmental compartments (air, soil, waters, agricultural products, and food chain) of the study areas.
5. Study of the perception of the state of health with regard to environmental contamination and the production of hypotheses of the consequence of pollution on morbidity for future epidemiological studies.
6. Transfer of environmental analysis and monitoring tools in the studied pilot areas: defense and damage biomarkers, cytotoxicity tests on human cells.
7. An experimental system for the decontamination of water intended for domestic use.
The adoption of these instruments for operations (by actors in both the public and private sectors) will enable measuring the success of MONOIL’s objectives.
